Springtime, sunshine, happy babies...We are so very lucky. Our psychadelic twins are coming out their cocoons, changing every day. They laugh so much, take naps and sleep all night. I thought four months ago that we would never sleep again. And, hey, I've been outside three times this week!!(and showered more than once) I feel as if I'm coming out of a cave. This is most evident in the way I wander around Target blinking and squinting in the flourescent light, bewildered by all the noise and people. When they stop to comment on the twins or to peek at them, I suddenly remember that not everyone has two at a time. What do people do all day with one baby?

Eliot & Sadie are growing so fast. We can't wait until spring when we can all go outside & enjoy the warm sun. (it's doctors' orders to stay home until cold & flu season is over.) Eliot is a brand new boy after his surgury.
They ate pears for the first time the other day, although I'm not sure that "ate" is what they did exactly. Sadie was incredulous, as usual; Eliot thought it was all terribly funny.

Welcome home, Eliot.
Eliot returns after his first heart surgury at Duke. He's doing very well, as you can see. Sadie, as beautiful as ever, is glad to have us home. We are so very blessed.

Little Eliot is always sleepy. His tiny heart has defects that make him very tired from congestive heart failure. We are trying to remain positive amid ambulance rides to the ER, weeks in the ICU, tons of medication, and the looming potential of open heart surgury on our tiny baby boy. We fight off dark clouds each day desparately, as if trying to keep him from knowing how devastated we are. The contrasts between him and Sadie are stark and biting. Sweet Sadie, with her big belly, wide-eyed grins, and voriacious appetite. We know things could be worse, but this does not help. Overwhelmed with more love than we ever thought possible, we are heart-broken and hopefull.
Send him love and strength in your thoughts.

first things first... We have never been more proud in our entire lives. That's Sadie on the left in the first picture, Eliot on the right. Next shot, reverse.

Oh, and by the way, that 'E' was for the nurses ... Sadie also had an 'S' on her cap. We knew better. No lady but Misty's lady could have such beautiful lips. And Eliot was my hero from the moment he opened his eyes - the man is made of stone from Tibet. Pure bliss, both of them.

thirty-six weeks, two days, and much anxiety in.... So many phone calls. "Are they here?" "Is it time?" "Are you a daddy yet?" And, at work: "I was hoping not to see you today...aren't you supposed to be having babies????"

Regardless, it's fine. Tonight, for about the 18th time, we've had our "last dinner before the babies come." It's getting expensive. And no amount of dreams, spicy food or 'the best way to go into labor' seem to be helping us right now. Perhaps the southern dream of castor oil would be the way to go. I hope not.
So...we're full of ennui, irritation...maybe too tired of waiting to be tired of ourselves, but we do get irritable. ...Yet so full of love and impatience...so full of fun while we talk about our babies, little Sadie and Eliot, ...So full of hope about life and lives to come. It's the best thing yet. Yet, the best things are still to come.

"Is it time yet?"

Here we are in the days before the arrival of Eliot & Sadie, our fraternal twins. I am about to burst, & every phone call begins with, "No, I'm not in labor." We are as prepared as anyone can be for the day we give birth to two babies at once. The trip so far has been bizarre & delightful. The transition from just the two of us to Dad & the Six-legged Belly has been truly humbling. The families wait, we wait, & the babies try to jump out of me all day long. And at any moment, we'll be rushing to the hospital, to loose these new spirits into the world.
